Slouchy Beret

Last year, my craze was knitting scarf. It still is this year, but I'm now all about knitting hats and berets. I just finished Utopia Hat and that was really easy to make and finished less than 1 day. So, I'm moving on to the more difficult pattern.

I want a slouchy beret that has a lacy pattern. So, when I found this pattern, I was really happy. I tried the pattern out with a wool blend yarn, but was too thick for me. I really want a lacy look for the beret, so I'm using Mondial Cotton Soft.

The Mondial Cotton Soft yarn is pretty thin, so I had to adjust the original pattern to get the right size.
Here's the pattern

Yarn: 1 skein Mondial Cotton Soft in Blue

Tools: 1 each of size 7 and 9 — 16″ circulars and some dpn needles

Vine Lace Pattern:
row 1: k1, yo, k2, ssk, k2tog, k2 , yo
row 2: knit all stitches
row 3: yo, k2, ssk, k2tog, k2, yo, k1
row 4: knit all stitches

With smaller needles, cast on 96 stitches. Join in the round.

Knit in 1×1 rib for 1.5″

Change to larger needles and (k2, m1) across entire row, increasing 48 stitches. This will give a total of 144 stitches.

Knit one row, placing a marker every 9 stitches.

Work Vine Lace Pattern (9 stitch pattern, repeated 16 times) for 4-7 inches, depending on how slouchy you want it. (I did about 6 inches for the hat in the picture).

Ending with row 4 of the vine pattern, decrease as follows:

1: K1, yo, ssk, ssk, k2tog, k2, yo (128)
2: K all stitches
3: Yo, k1, ssk, k2tog, k2tog, yo, k1
4: K all stitches
5: K1, yo, ssk, ssk, k2tog, yo
6: K all stitches
7: Yo, ssk, k3tog, yo, k1
8: K all stitches
9: K1, yo, ssk, k2tog
10: K all stitches
11: Ssk, k2tog, yo
12: K all stitches
13: K2tog k1
14: K2tog

Cut yarn, and use a tapestry needle to pull it through the remaining stiches. Weave in ends, being mindful of the lace pattern.
